Course Outline
This course will provide you the skills and knowledge of operating a Skid Steer in a civil construction environment. Under the legislation the earth moving courses is competency based.
For beginners you will learn about site procedures and operating plant and machinery. This course will provide you the basics for your career as an operator.For experienced operators this course is about demonstrating your skills and knowledge to satisfy the competency requirements.
For both levels of experience, we blend theory applications with practical exercises to form competency.
Course Length
Beginner level? We allow a maximum of 3 days.
Advanced operators? We can provide the option of a VOC. Please allow 1 day.
RPL and credit transfer: If eligible and you can supply current operating evidence we may be able to offer you an online solution. Please contact us with your inquiries and eligibility.
Theory
Legislation | planning | environmental management plan | correct safe operating procedures | hazard identification and implementation of controls to reduce the risk of injury | knowledge of site clean ups.
Practical
Physical pre start of machine and basic maintenance / service | controls and safe operation of machine | fitting and purpose of specific attachments | field exercises | demonstrating hazard identification and implementation of controls | load shifting and specific tasks | machinery relocation | shutdown of machine / equipment.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy
Under the legislation, we are able to provide you two options.
The first option; the student can effectively communicate both verbally and written and is able to competently read and write while under instruction throughout the course unassisted.
The second option requires direct assistance for the student, where writing is somewhat difficult. Therefore in regards to written assessments we are able to conduct a one-on-one verbal assessment with the student.
This process involves the assessor verbally asking the assessment questions in a one on one scenario.
- Written assessments in English only and provisions from the Australian Government at this stage does not extend to translating devices.
- This is also not a spelling test.
Government Notification
N/A for RII Competency based courses.
Medical
Must be physically suited to working in construction
Prerequisite Information
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Qualification Outcomes
Statement of Atttainment (SOA) from RTO (commonly known as a completion certificate)
Wallet sized plastic card / ticket from RTO

Recognition of Prior Learning is eligible for this course. Evidence must be supplied that you are currently working in the construction industry, i.e.. you are operating the machine regularly / recently and or hold an non valid OHSCER or similar ticket.

What to Wear
- Classroom: PPE not required (unless on site)
- Practical: * Wear basic PPE, items as a Hi Vis shirt or vest, safety boots – composite cap or steel cap, safety sunglasses, shorts and short sleeve are permitted. Socks must be worn.with safety boots.
