Course Outline

A Standard 11 surface coal mine induction describes that workers are to be formally trained in 6 nationally recognized units of competency from the Certificate 2 in Surface Extraction package.  Workers must obtain a level of safety and emergency skills for the potential hazards and dangers in the Resources and Infrastructure Industry.

Below are the 6 units for S11 Surface Coal Mine Induction they are:

  • RIICOM201D Communicate in the workplace
  • RIIGV201D Comply with site work processes/procedures
  • RIIWHS201D Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures
  • RIIRIS201D Conduct local risk control
  • RIIERR205D Apply initial response First Aid
  • RIIERR302D Respond to local emergencies and incidents

In regards to BMA owned coal mine sites, a bridging program is for people who are about to commence employment or a new contract with the company.  The following units “above” must be completed, then you must complete an “add on” known as Core Induction units to complete a BMA Standard 11.  You will then be an inducted employee or contractor:

  • A BMA cultural introduction
  • The BMA Charter, Code of Conduct and Life Saving Rules
  • Introduction to BHP Billiton and the mine to market process
  • Health, safety and environment expectations
  • Workplace hazards, legal obligations, building a safety culture, Fitness for Work
  • BMA Safe, Job Safety Analysis and incident reporting
“On completion of the course, the participant will be issued a Statement of Completion. On return of a completed Workplace Skills Validation from their BMA work site, the participant will be issued with a Statement of Attainment.” – BMA

Introduction to the mining industry | Qld Government Legislation | Risk management / mine hazards / JSA | tag out, lock out and isolating procedures | vehicle and machinery interaction procedures / communications | Emergency procedures | Apply First Aid | JSEA | Work site processes

Practical

Tag out, lock out and isolating procedures | Apply First Aid / CPR | Fire fighting exercise

Language, Literacy and Numeracy

A satisfactory level of written skills is required from the mine site in order for mine safety documentation / JSA / JSEA to be completed on a daily basis.

Government Notification

N/A for RII Competency courses

Medical

Must be physically fit to working on a mine site.

A coal board medical will also be required prior to employment on a coal mine

Prerequisite Information

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Qualification Outcomes

Statement of Atttainment (SOA) from RTO

Wallet sized plastic card / ticket from RTO
